Genuinely rare specification: the PZJ77V is the range-topping 70 Series, powered by Toyota’s desirable 3. 5-litre 1PZ turbo diesel straight-six and paired with the coveted F5 five-speed manual gearbox. Very few 70 Series were ordered in this combination even in period, and fewer still survive — most UK and European market cars you’ll see are the smaller 4-cylinder diesel with automatic transmission. This is the one enthusiasts actually look for.
Two owners from new. The first was a civil engineering firm based in the mountains of Nagano Prefecture, who specified the vehicle new with the full-length roof rack and rear ladder for carrying survey equipment and materials to sites across some forestry roads, exactly the kind of demanding, low-mileage-per-year use that keeps these chassis honest.
When the firm modernised its fleet in the late 1990s, the Land Cruiser was bought privately by its second owner, a semi-retired mechanic and long-time Toyota enthusiast, who kept it garaged, serviced it himself, and used it sparingly for weekend trips into the mountains, the same terrain it had been built for. That continuity of care over three decades is a big part of why this example presents as well as it does.
Finished in the classic beige that suits the model so well, and still wearing its factory roof rack and rear-mounted ladder, an increasingly hard-to-find, period-correct touch that instantly signals genuine overland pedigree rather than a later add-on. Straight, honest bodywork, tidy chrome bumpers and side steps, and the desirable white steel wheels. The interior is equally true to the car’s working heritage: cloth seats, full manual controls, AC and the twin-stick transfer case set-up that 70 Series purists want to see, all in solid, useable order.
Mechanically, the 1PZ turbo diesel is regarded as one of the toughest engines Toyota ever built, and the manual gearbox and manual locking hubs make this a proper go-anywhere Land Cruiser in the traditional sense — no complexity, no electronics to worry about, just a vehicle built to run for decades.
