Details

1960 Chevrolet Corvair 500.

With only 58855 miles since new, this is a perfect example of an original well-maintained, low mileage car. The underbody was rust treated when new and is 99% rust free.

Mechanically the car has been regularly serviced and everything works, worn parts have been replaced when needed (latest being master brake cylinder in January 2020). Body is exceptionally straight and in good condition.

The paint is mostly original and has some amazing patina (Still shines in the sun). Interior is in exceptionally good condition; it really feels like sitting in a new car from 1960!

The car is powered by a 2.3L six cylinder boxer engine, connected to a smooth 2-speed Power-glide automatic. The car has an original petrol heater in the front that gives instant heat. The rear seats fold down to carry extra luggage. AM radio still works and so does everything else. It was once used in Norway in -10 degrees and the car was nice and warm inside! Incredibly effective for the year.

This Roman Red Corvair was sold new in Phoenix Arizona to a Norwegian lady (Still have original hand book with dealer and buyer names, rear dealer sticker still on the car!). She brought it back to Oslo Norway in 1961 and for the next 25 years it was used as a Sunday driver. A collector then owned the car until 2008 when the current owner bought the car.

Car has done many trips over Europe without issues. It’s not a racecar, but has no problem keeping up with modern traffic, this car handles much better than most American cars from the time.  The huge wrap around front and rear windscreens gives excellent visibility.

The Corvair unfairly got a bad rep by Ralf Nader. Nader decided to highlight the Corvair in his book Unsafe at any speed. Today it’s no secret the big 3 where cutting corners, but the Corvair was no less safe than any other car from 1960. In 1971 road safety tests actually showed the Corvair was top 2 safest US car from 1960.

Chevrolet Corvairs has a large following in the US and all parts are available and the car will come with some spares.

A car in this original state is very hard to come by and its beautiful condition just shows the care the previous owners took, looking after this little gem.
