A defined instruction
An independent opinion.
A reasoned report.
When a car forms part of a financial settlement or dispute, the brief needs to be clear.
Nick Aitken provides specialist vehicle valuation services for solicitors, mediators and private clients, including Single Joint Expert instructions. The work begins with the questions to be addressed, the valuation date and the relevant documents or directions.
Most valuations are prepared online from the supplied evidence. We review the proposed scope, available records and reporting deadline before accepting the instruction, and arrange a UK-wide inspection where the instruction or evidence requires it. Fees are quoted for the work required and invoiced as agreed.
Independence comes first
No interest in
buying the car.
A legal valuation is a separate professional instruction.
Nick has no interest in buying or selling the vehicle under that instruction. The role is to assess the evidence and explain an independent opinion, rather than achieve a particular figure for an instructing party.
Where expert evidence is prepared for the court, the duty to assist the court takes priority over the interests of the person instructing or paying the expert. Relevant procedural requirements and court directions guide the report.
What the report addresses
The valuation date.
The individual vehicle.
The report identifies the vehicle and the information considered, explains the relevant specification and condition, and sets out the market evidence and reasoning behind the opinion.
Photographs, invoices, service records and other evidence help establish the vehicle's specification and condition at the required valuation date. Where an inspection is agreed, it records what can be observed at the visit. Any assumptions, evidence gaps or limitations are made clear.
How it works
A clear next step.
-
Send the proposed brief.
Provide the letter of instruction, vehicle list, required valuation date, case deadline and any relevant directions. Identify the instructing solicitor and parties where appropriate.
-
Agree the scope and fee.
We confirm availability, questions to be addressed, access arrangements and the quoted fee. Joint instructions and communication arrangements are agreed before work begins.
-
Evidence, research, report.
Nick reviews the supplied evidence, researches relevant market comparisons and prepares the written opinion. An in-person inspection is arranged UK-wide where agreed within the instruction. Clarification questions and any further work are handled under the instruction and applicable directions.
Working with professional advisers
A named expert.
A practical conversation.
Explore probate valuationsNick is a member of the Institute of the Motor Industry. His work as a specialist dealer and importer informs the technical and market assessment.
For civil proceedings, reporting requirements may include CPR Part 35 and its practice direction. Family proceedings have their own expert evidence rules.
For an estate valuation outside a dispute, our probate service is a more suitable starting point.
Fees and instructions
Quoted for the scope.
Legal work is quoted on enquiry and invoiced. Inspection travel, additional vehicles and further questions are addressed in the agreed terms.

Before we begin.
Can you act as a Single Joint Expert?
Yes, subject to the proposed scope, availability and a conflict check. Send the letter of instruction and any relevant court directions so the work and communication arrangements can be reviewed.
Does the car need to be inspected?
Not always. Most of our valuations are prepared online. The appropriate approach depends on the instruction, evidence and any relevant directions. Where an inspection is needed, we travel UK-wide and agree access in advance. Any limitations are explained in the report.
Can you meet a court deadline?
Tell us the deadline before instructing. We confirm availability and the reporting timetable before accepting the work; urgent availability is not assumed.
Will you buy the car afterwards?
Nick has no interest in buying or selling the vehicle under a legal instruction. The valuation work is kept independent of That's Classic's vehicle sales activity.
